Maharashtra: Ward officer beaten up by mob of hawkers in Nalasopara, four held

MUMBAI: A civic
and three staffers were beaten up by a mob of hawkers for being stopped from doing business on the road in
(east) on Monday evening. The officer sustained injuries. Four men have been arrested.
All shops, establishments, markets in the
Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation
(VVMC) limit have to function from 7am to 11am. On Monday at around 6pm, the 'B' ward officer Madhukar Dongre (46) along with three staffers went to Rehmat Nagar in Nalasopara (east) where hawkers on hand carts were carrying out business. The road was packed with hawkers and all Covid-19 regulations were violated.
Dongre alighted from his car along with his staffers and went around asking hawkers to stop doing business. The hawkers turned violent and began assaulting Dongre and his team. A video of the assault went viral on Tuesday. In the video, Dongre (in white shirt) is seen being beaten and pinned down by a mob of hawkers. Soon the crowd increased to over 100. Dongre's team managed to rescue him and put him inside his car.
The Tulinj police reached the spot but they too bore the brunt of the mob violence. Extra police force was called. The hawkers fled from the spot leaving behind their handcarts, filling with vegetables, fruits and goods. A civic team went around seizing all the carts.
Dongre and one of his team members sustained injuries. They were treated in the hospital.
A case under
sections 353 (stopping government servant on duty), 332(hurt) and rioting were registered. Four men have been arrested.
On Tuesday, while shops opened in the Rehmat Nagar area at 7 am and shut down at 11 am, hawkers were missing from the road throughout the day. Heavy police presence was there in the area.
Cases have been rising in the
region. On Tuesday, 683 new patients were recorded, taking the total positives to 51,576. The deaths recorded on Tuesday was 11, taking the tally to 1064. The active cases are 11,023.
