Mumbai is
again facing acute vaccine shortage. Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal said
that 37,000 people were vaccinated on Saturday and that they have been left
with just 45,000 doses of Covishield and 23,000 doses of Covaxin. The vaccines
are spread over 147 centers.
The BMC
officers said that there is no indication when they would get the next bathch
of vaccines.
Sources
in the BMC said that Chahal has already told the union health ministry’s joint
secretary Kunal Kumar to give a weekly programme and send vaccines on regular
basis as the Government Of India is the sole procuring agency.
On May
1, the union government has said the vaccination will be done for all over 18
years of age. Chahal said that this will mean that 80 lakh population will be
due for vaccination.
The BMC
experts a lot of chaos at the vaccination centers as there will be lot of
shortage and people will demand vaccination.
At
present, the BMC has 21,704 beds and 4,114 are vacant. On Sunday, the wing C of
NESCO jumbo center is being opened and 1,500 beds are being added, said chahal.
Meanwhile,
several political parties which want to see better prospects in civic
elections, have set up control rooms for admission. The BMC has told them not
to insist on private hospitals and not to insist on admission for people whose oxygen
levels are alright.
In
Mumbai, 5,888 new cases of Covid were detected and 71 people died. The BMC
stated that 8,549 people recovered.
